SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE CRUFTS 14

Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers

It was a great honour to be invited to judge my breed at Crufts & I send thanks to the Crufts Committee & to all the exhibitors who supported me with their entries. On the whole I found improvements, particularly in dentition & pigmentation, but some exhibits are still on the large side, & others overweight. Movement continues to require attention, too many lack the required front & rear action described in the Standard, close hind movement being a concern. Something else that has crept in, & requires attention from breeders, is black in the coat, particularly on the head & the foreface, this can be expected in puppies but should have cleared by maturity. Finally I would like to mention the issue of Schnauzer-like fringes over the eyes, which I found detracted from the gentle, kind expression that I expect to find in a Wheaten & I hope that this fashion is to be short-lived.

In making my selections I looked for well presented, correctly sized dogs with good reach & drive. I had to forgive faults in some cases to ensure that my line up was as uniform as possible, but some dogs moved down the line when I had sufficient others of good quality without those faults. In the large classes many deserving exhibits left the ring cardless, but that is the way of dog shows. Ultimately I was very pleased with my winners & proud that my BOB was also thought highly of by the group judge, Gerard Morris, who selected him for the final cut, making him one of an elite few Wheatens to have this honour bestowed on him.

VD (3)

1 Hanna’s Ch Kinaelan Quietly Does It, strong head with excellent dentition, good angulation fore & aft, level topline, silky coat of good colour, moved with drive;

2 Evans-Barry’s Int/Ch/Ir Ch Hobel Joe O’Brien, good head on excellent neck, good shoulders & depth of chest. Lovely wavy coat but not as silky as 1. Close in hind movement today;

3 Glew’s Wentloog Mozambique at Braelochyen, nice for size, lovely head, square outline, coat in good order, but sluggish on the move today.

PD (2)

1 Howe’s Daisymaes Enforcer, up to size. Good head, but trim, particularly over the eye, spoilt his expression, his dark muzzle should clear as he matures. Nice front with good shoulder placement, level topline & good rear angulation. Coat of good texture & colour. A little excited when moving today;

2 Calvert & Naylor’s Amaricy Bullet Proof, smaller dog & slightly longer cast. Playing his handler up so movement was erratic & difficult to assess. Trim did not enhance his good points.

JD (1)

1 Mapson’s Abiqua Wild Jack Of Hearts, quality youngster who stood alone but he’s good enough to win in the best of company. Clear coat of excellent texture & with required wave. Good head, good mouth, arched neck into well placed shoulders, deep chest, level topline, good tailset. True movement fore & aft, should have a great future.

YD (2)

1 Hopper’s Starcadia Olympic Gold Buzz, nicely presented compact square dog with deep chest, level topline, short coupled. Movement OK;

2 Griffiths’ Manawyddan I Got Rhythmn, another who was less settled than expected today. Good head planes with excellent pigmentation, neat small ears. Level topline, tail set OK, wide in both front & rear, which affected movement. Coat developing well.

PGD (9)

1 Buyle’s Lord Of Love from Kizzys Paradise, excellent dog of good colour, square outline, great head on correct neck, good lay of shoulder, straight front with good depth of chest. Good rear angulation. Right up on his toes. Moved out well;

2 Subertova’s House Of Softy Orlando, another beautiful dog. Good head with excellent expression & dark pigmentation. Neck flowing into well placed shoulders. Good rear angulation but coat sparse on hind legs. Moved with purpose;

3 Hopper’s Starcadia Olympic Gold Buzz.

LD (9)

1 O’Hare’s Emalot Mister Happy, typical of this kennel’s breeding, square outline, enough neck, level topline & good tailset. A bit of a handful for his handler on the day, but he represented himself well & moved with purpose. He has a nice coat that would benefit from better presentation;

2 Omitogum & Matti’s Frontline Mr Feelgood, good sized Wheaten with lovely front & good rear angulation, tail held well. Lovely coat of good colour, styling over eyes is harsh spoiling his expression. Movement not as positive as 1 today;

3 House of Softy Orlando.

OD (17)

1 Bradford’s Ch Abiqua Wild Casinoroyale, presented to perfection. Masculine dog of correct size with excellent head, arched neck, good shoulder placement, level topline, great rear. Quality coat. Moved with drive. Great attitude, couldn’t ask more of him. CC & BOB;

2 Hobson & Leigh’s Am Ch Abiqua Wild Knight Romance, another lovely dog from this kennel, slightly smaller than 1, but all male. Many of the above comments apply. His movement in the challenge ensured RCC;

3 Christensen’s Dan Ch Hopla Big Foot Bobo, slightly larger than first 2 but great outline & lovely coat with a nice sheen to it. Great construction throughout & moved well to take this place.

GCD (2)

1 Satherley & Gibbons’ Silkcroft No More Games, would like slightly stronger head, topline correct & moved OK. His coat is at the teenage stage, but time is on his side & should develop with maturity;

2 Hughlock’s Bargehouse Minstrel Boy, handsome boy of good size & lovely colour & with nice expression. Front movement not as desired.

VB (9,2)

1 Erdmann’s Ballyhara’s Highlight of Emotion, beautifully presented lady in her 10th year. Well constructed & gorgeous curly coat, fabulous pigmentation, moved with verve. She asked for her 1st place & I couldn’t deny her;

2 Griffiths’ Wintrypark Miss Goodnight with Manawyddan, very similar in type to1, pretty girl who enjoyed her day out & her place was well deserved;

3 Canicula The Elven Queen, great mover, coat in nice order if a little short, good topline & tailset, stands foursquare.

PB (7)

1 Hammond & Evans’ Calvenace Kichi, happy, confident little lady. Square with level topline, good tailset. Deep colour, moved well. BP;

2 Hammond & Evans’ Calvenace Jacala, sister to 1, size smaller & very feminine, not as well schooled, but moved well when she got going;

3 Escott’s Sidereal’s Essence Of Time, nicely balanced girl, feminine head, dark pigmentation. Good neck & topline. Handler moved her slightly faster that 1 & 2 showing her movement to good advantage.

JB (2)

1 Moran’s Abiqua Wild She’s By Design, beautiful little girl, moved like a dream. Sweet head, perfect dentition, best of toplines, well set tail. Coat pale, but should deepen with maturity. She will win with the best when her confidence peaks;

2 Herbert’s Calvenace She’s The One at Julibidd, close up to 1, feminine head, nice front & level topline. Slightly longer cast. Coat profuse but neatly presented, moved well enough.

YB (10,3)

1 Van Merrienboer’s Aranka of Robans’Home, this little one stole my heart. Compact, square outline, pretty head, with correct pigmentation, gorgeous coat. Showed herself well;

2 Hobson & Bradford’s Abiqua Wild Wrapped In Ivy, a close decision between these two, very sound bitch who was unfortunate to meet 1 today. She is feminine throughout but she was less settled which affected her performance. Beautifully presented;

3 Johnson’s Garsayno Gold Imp, larger of the 3 but she took my eye for her square outline, quality coat & moderate angulation. Moved well.

PGB (11,1)

1 Bradford’s Abiqua Wild Is All She Wrote, good for size, very feminine. Pretty head, great neck & shoulders, level topline & good angulation, moved out well. Presentation spot on;

2 Jefferies’ Frontline Simply Beautiful, a size too big for me but had enough qualities to ensure this placing. Loved her coat & she moved & was handled well;

3 Naylor’s Amaricy I Won’t Back Down, nicely constructed little lady, good for make & shape & she moved out well. Her dark foreface detracts from her expression, which moved her slightly down the line up.

LB (15,1)

1 Watkin’s Chloeanco Hunni Caress for Zaraslake, very well presented eyecatching showgirl. Nice for make & shape with good head, level topline, beautifully alert expression & she moved with drive. Carrying a tad too much weight to go further;

2 Glennon’s Hobel Karacsony, loved her general make & shape, glorious curly coat with correct sheen, although pale. Good neck & best of fronts, great tailset & rear angulation. Moved well;

3 Witheyman’s Cameron Because, small in stature, but well balanced. Moved out well, but standing was just a tad jacked at the rear & she was slightly lacking in personality although she did enough to ensure her placing.

OB

1 Moran’s Abiqua Wild In A Satin Sash, unsettled to start with, but showed promise & she was more settled when it came to placings, showing off her lovely flowing movement. Good for size, pleasing head, lovely neck & shoulders, level topline, correct tailset. CC;

2 Escott’s Ch Silkcroft Light Fantastic, nicely presented bitch who stood out in the line up, many of the above comments apply, but preferred the size of 1;

3 Dowdy’s Ch Denzilly Sweet Rebel, lovely for size & make & I have admired her from the ringside on a number of occasions. Although a ch she still has some maturing to do but she did enough today to ensure her placing.

GCB (4)

1 Witheyman’s Steefgrace Dutch Kiss by Dascol, beautifully presented & handled. Nice for size, coat & general shape. Moved out well & had great confidence. RCC;

2 Salisbury & Kehoe’s Killeshin Libaneire, she was well handled to this placing by her junior handler who had one of the broadest smiles I have ever seen. Size larger than 1 but feminine enough & with curly coat of good texture. Nice front & moderate angulation;

3 Busby’s Calvenace Killer Queen at Zakby, good for size. Coat to improve but showing good wave on body now. Slightly longer cast, moved out well.
